Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Guillermo del Toro directs this sequel to the very popular Hellboy of 2004. Ron Perlman comes back to bring this "spawn of hell" his character and human personality. Selma Blair as Liz Sherman is Hellboy's love and possess her own super powers. An ancient truce is broken between Earth and the creatures of another dimension and they are here to bring Hell back on Earth. Hellboy alone suited to take on these creatures and no matter what the public thinks of him he can get the job done !
What we also get is a love story with Hellboy and Liz Sherman. We are not really accustomed to having a Spawn of Hell being capable of love or like all humans needing love. This constant reminder of all of our human frailties endears us to the character. Unlike other Comic book hero's and movies, Guillermo del Toro brings to life many elaborate fantasy characters not unlike his work in Pan's Labyrinth. The special effects are crafted excellently as well as action sequences. Even the plot makes sense in a fantasy kind of way and moves smoothly.
But in the end it is Ron Perlman that makes the case for the movie and it is a stroke of genius and strong will from Guillermo del Toro in Hellboy 1 in fighting for him as this charater against the producers that makes the success. One of the better comic book movies. I liked it as a good strong B plus A- movie.
