Gabriel Garcia Marquez's wonderful novel Love in the Time of Cholera has finally made it into film and about time too. However this wonderful Literature Nobel quality novel's film transformation is disappointing. It is well worth seeing if you are a Marquez or Llosa fan but might be tedious for those who aren't.

 

The novel is about a man in late 19th century South America who waits 53 years to wait for his beloved's husband to die so that he can marry her. He is very devoted and not to be deterred. However he assuages his love pangs by having affairs with virtually every woman he can find. He accumulates a notebook of 622+ women before the long awaited husband's death. The story is really about how  hopefulness for love does not die with age. It is wonderful to see 70+ year old lovers.

 

Acting is excellent  on the part of many but really bad on the part of a few. The setting and appurtenances are wonderful, especially the jungle, buildings and riverboats. But the movie is slow through the middle.

 

Overall it is disappointing for Marquez fans but still worth going to see.
