My Week With Marilyn
My Week With Marilyn is a very moving but brief glimpse into the life of Marilyn Monroe from the diary of Colin Clark, a 23 year old British kid who wants to be a film producer. Monroe is in England at Pinehurst Studios to film The Prince and the Showgirl with Laurence Olivier. One feels so sorry and so sad for Monroe, a beautiful sensitive young woman who only wants to be loved for herself and is besieged by not only the public, but her staff. Olivier comes across as a horse's back end (well played by kenneth Branagh.) Dame Sybil Thorndike (played by Dame Judi Dench) is the once person, besides Clark, who is truly caring and considerate of Monroe's needs and difficulties.
The cast is a wonderful collection of some of the best American and British actors (it is a joint BBC production with Weinstein so you will recognize some of the cast from various BBC series) including Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe, young, delightful and sweetly innocent Eddie Redmayne as Colin Clark, and Sir Derek Jacobi as Sir Owen Moreshead.
The film and Williams take a little while to warm-up but one soon forgets that Williams does not quite look like Marilyn as we become more comfortable with her and wistful about her.
The film is touching and ultimately sad as we all know Monroe's fate but loving in its treatment of her. Such a beautiful and innocent woman so misunderstood and so mistreated by sex-starved society (mostly men).
Do see it.
