The series The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, etc. from Sweden (loosely based upon the books of the same name) is excellent. I rented the first one from Netflix and saw the 2nd in theatre in Reno. These films are subtitled.

The stories, set in Sweden, wrap around a young woman with a troubled past who works as an investigative researcher/freelancer and a journalist for a magazine who befriends her. This young woman went to her mother's defense from her brutal father and spent years in a cruel mental asylum for her efforts. Then when released she is horribly abused by her probation officer, a prominent attorney. The films are graphic - expect sex, violence, and lots of smoking. But they are not excessive given the nature of her story. She has a primal focus in her work on going after men who rape and abuse women and who traffic young women for the sex trade.

These stories fit the odd genre of murder/crime movies for women.
