The Kids Are Alright
The Kids Are Alright is a great film, a serious comedy about a new type of American family. Lesbian couple has two kids, one 18 year old girl and a 15 year old boy. Both conceived from donated sperm from the same man. It all seems like a happy family though the physician Mom is somewhat controlling and the landscaper Mom is much more easy going and New Agey.
Things get disturbed when the boy decides he wants to meet their sperm donor Dad. So he and his sister find out who he is and arrange to meet him at sperm donor's successful locavore organic restaurant. When the "Momses" find out, they are not too happy but go along and invite him to dinner. Soon he seems to be becoming part of the family. He hires the landscaping Mom to do his yard and things get a bit out of hand. Doctor Mom is becoming very uncomfortable with the situation even though sperm donor Dad is having a positive influence on the two kids.
Mark Ruffalo plays the sperm donor Dad with surprising New Age sensitivity. And Jilianne Moore, Annette Bening and the two teenage actors all do very good jobs with their roles. The film is serious about families and the relationships within them but there are bits of comedy interwoven as funny, awkward situations occur.
Overall excellent and very worth seeing. There is a nude sex scene so just beware.
