Cyrus
Cyrus is a very good indie film. It is a bit of a comedy but mostly serious.
It has been 7 years since John's divorce. He's depressed and hasn't had a girlfriend since. He is overly dependent upon his ex-wife who is about to remarry. He turns to her at all hours to lament his life and seek advice. This drives her patient but exasperated fiance nuts.
At his ex's engagement party, John makes several pathetic attempts to flirt. He is surprised when one attractive woman, Molly, flirts back. She is also divorced. They immediately start a relationship, both appear quite smitten with each other.
However, she has a 22 year old obese son who lives at home with her that she has not told him about. He finds out when he follows her home one night, falls asleep in his car and the next morning meets the son, Cyrus. Cyrus seemingly friendly and quite intelligent, asks him in. It becomes apparent rather quickly that this son and mother have a rather strange relationship when the son goes into the bathroom while his mother is taking a shower and the two start singing together. They are unusually close.
Cyrus wants no one to come between himself and his mother and does his best to sabotage the relationship between John and Molly. Cyrus is very manipulative and appears charming when his mother is present. It becomes a test of wills between Cyrus and John.
All of the main characters are flawed and quite human. Molly had home schooled Cyrus and coddles him still. Cyrus is spoiled and manipulative but basically a good intelligent kid underneath. John has his own problems not being able to let go of his ex-wife.
A very good film, well acted. I highly recommend it.
