Mother and Child
I saw the indie film Mother and Child today. It was very very good. It follows three sets of people dealing with adoption. One is a 37 year old very successful but emotionally distant and manipulative attorney who was put up for adoption immediately after her 14 year old mother gave birth to her. She never knew her birth mother and lost her adoptive parents before adulthood. She has had 4 jobs in ten years in prestigious law firms and is very ambitious.
The other woman followed is the now 51 year old woman who had be forced by her mother 37 years ago to give up her newborn daughter. She lives with her very elderly mother and is cold and very prickly having suffered since from her Catholic mother's criticism. She is a physical therapist and initially resists and repels friendship offered by a new male physical therapist.
The third set of people are a couple who have not been able to conceive and are seeking adoption through a Catholic home and adoption agency, the same place where the older woman have been sent to (along with many other pregnant teenagers) to quietly live and then give birth.
This is an excellent film.
