This true story (film made in 2001 in Germany, subtitled) follows a champion German swimmer (100m free) who escapes to west Berlin a few days after the wall is built. Together with his friends who also escaped and an American, he plots to dig a tunnel from an old abandoned bldg about a block from the new Berlin Wall into the eastern sector. He wants to get his sister and her family out of east Germany and the others also have either lost a spouse trying to escape or want to get other people/family out.

The film is set in the days immediately following the closing off of east Berlin from the British/American/French sectors of Berlin.

Acting is excellent and the film historically significant.
