The Green Zone

I saw two films in Reno today. One was the Iraq war story The Green Zone and the other is a British conspiracy story The Ghost Writer. I'd give Green Zone a B+ and the Ghost Writer an A-.

The Green Zone stars Matt Damon as a chief in the US Army who is leading a team searching for WMD in Bagdhad a month after the US invasion. He and is team are coming up empty. Every site that is supposedly class one intelligence quality that they search is empty. He wants to know why and he wants better intelligence. In the process of digging up an empty space in the middle of Bagdhad, an Iraqi man approaches him and tells him that he just saw a big time Iraqi General and a bunch of Baathist convene for a meeting nearby. The chief decides to divert his team to try to catch the bad guys.

Soon the chief is trying to figure out if the general could be the secret asset "Magellan" that supposedly told a senior US Defence official about all the WMD sites they are now searching. And he wants to know the real story and find out the real sites. He comes up against a senior administration official (a blend of Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Cheney and Pierel (sp)) but gains the support of a long-time CIA Middle East operative.

Very good but the ending is very wishful thinking.
