Everybody is fine except the audience.  This is a family holiday planned release,  executed and delivered in a tightly held constrained form to illicit an emotional feel good response or maybe attempt to help you realize that in every dysfunctional family and through any crisis you can still communicate honestly....sometimes.  It kind of works but not in a way that either makes you laugh or feel for the family as they work through this awkward time in their family history.

I enjoyed the performances of the individual actors.  It was nice to See Kate Beckinsale not in leather trying to kill a Lycan for a change.  Drew Barrymore seemed a little at odds with her character,  Robert De Niro seemed to be able to adapt pretty good to an aging father / widower with grown children and the associated health problems of an aging generation. He was able to deliver some comic relief on occasion as well.  The real problem is the script was a little too slow, and the parts and the characters all seemed to be held back.  The drama was missing from the Drama portion of the movie.

As predicted in the previews there are problems when the family members all miss a combined meeting with dad for a family event / BBQ at his home.  He then , against doctors advise, sets out to visit them one by one and see if everyone is fine.  Well as you might guess the answer is no.  At first the issues are not so obvious but there are clues in an unruly  grand child, other hints would be giving some of the few plot mysteries away.  Just be advised not all is well. 

As the movie drags on from one home to the next, more of the deep seated problems are surfacing and of course a final tear jerking scene to resolve the issues and reset the daddy-o-meter so the movie can come to happy conclusion. 

Not a bad movie, just nothing all that exciting worth spending the hard earned money for.  I'd look for another holiday comedy or drama and wait for this to be on DVD.
