Up In The Air
Ryan Bingham ( George Clooney) is more comfortable traveling than at home. He certainly lives well on the road, and he has a whole list of philosophical witticisms about travel, relationships, and his unusual job as a professional corporate "downsizing" expert. His life's mission is the unlikely goal of amassing 10 million frequent flier miles. To date there is no such thing as a permanent relationship, family, children, or settling down.
Then he meets the traveling partner of his dreams. Alex Goran, played by Vera Farmiga is the seasoned traveler and business women, looking for fun, the no commitment person he has just dreamed about. She is obviously doing well, travels like Ryan, and then just when all is going well, a new employee, Natalie, joins his firm ( Anna Kendrick, ) and talks his boss, Craig Gregory, an absolutely heartless businessman played by Jason Batemen into coming into the digital age and performing their work online. With his lifestyle threatened he takes her on the road to experience his life and their job first hand.
Compounding this are several little sub plots, one of the larger ones involves his sister's wedding and the families desire to obtain photos in as many cities as possible adding comedy portion of the movie.
The plot intertwines the characters lives with the real life drama and heartbreak of corporate downsizing and the lost careers of thousands of people. We are sucked into the lives of the victims of the lay off , where a few are actually going to move on to better life goals, but in so many, especially many of the older employees, we witness total discouragement and horror. The real timing of this movie brings a very serious tone to the theme, all the while wrapping it in some very hilarious situations. This is where Anna Kendrick actually brought a lot of added value to the production. Not only is she the fast talking bubbly character that played a high school socialite in the Twilight series of movies, but she can take that excitement and tempo and add a very human element to what we thought just might have been a stuffy analytical "by the numbers" corporate ax person. She is not out shadowed by Clooney or Farminga's performances but holds her own in the movie. Vera Farminga also creates a very complex character as well. She has some great surprises in her as the plot develops.
Finally Clooney himself is at his best. His character is going to go through a lot change in this movie and the plot will take you to places you don't expect. But what as first starts out to be a story about a carefree wandering soul, turns into a complex story of intertwined lives.
A great Comedy with added drama.

Up in the Air
LinZ — Tue, 01/05/2010 - 18:49I saw the latest George Clooney film, Up In the Air today. You could easily say that American Airlines was his costar. They sure got a lot of great publicity in this film. Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizing specialist. In other words he flies all over the US firing people...perfect job and a growth industry in this recession (which is the downer part of the movie. His ultimate goal in life is to earn membership in American Airlines 10 million mile club (which only has 6 members). He does not believe in home, car, furniture, family, friends or in having any type of attachments. In fact, he earns extra money giving lectures about this which he calls "what's in your backpack?" On one of his trips he meets the woman of his dream, another very frequent flyer who wants no attachments or strings or anything....just fun and sex when they run into each other on the road. So he is happy. His company decides it needs to cut costs and hires a young fresh and naive woman who minored in psychology to develop an online interview firing system so that no one has to travel anymore. He hates this idea. So his boss makes him take her on a round of rapid firing around the country. She now has to face the reality of what effect her flowcharts on how to fire people have when firing people to their faces. He must confront his life beliefs and life style when she tells him just what she thinks of his life. And oh, there's that woman frequent traveller he is beginning to get attached to. I am very happy to say that he gets his comeuppance in the end but sad to see the reality of what this recession we are in really does to people. Very good, very funny in places but not a happy movie....after all this is about people losing their jobs.
