My One and Only
My One and Only , Is loosely a biopic story of Anne Hamilton Spauding called Anne Deveraux and played by Renee Zellweger, George Hamiltion ( Logan Lerman) and his older brother William Potter called Robbie (Mark Rendall) in this movie.
The movie starts with a serious indiscretion and love affair that his father has with one of his band's singers ( In real life June Howard). The father, George is played by Kevin Bacon. An admitted loving but horrid father. He cheats on his wife and is traveling all over the country and it is any wonder why he had children at all.
Anne cleans out what cash there is and leaves. She sends George Jr. on an errand to find a car, and they are living New York for parts unknown. In real life Anne wanted to visit every person she had ever dated to see if she loved any of them and find a new husband. Her character is inattentive, self absorbed, and lacks any serious parenting skills. However she has a self styled charm and personal honor code that is admiral in some ways.
The adventure starts in Boston, then to Pittsburgh , St. Louis, throughout the southwest and Mexico before ending in Hollywood. Some of the best lines are delivered by the older brother Robbie who pays a very obvious effeminate young man with impeccable timing and delivery of his one liners and humor. George is the Narrator, cynical, kind and has a charm that will be recognized in the older George we know today.
Renee Zellweger was also a good choice for the part of the mother in the sense see is approaching the age of the real Anne in this time period , 1953, when the real Anne was 43, she is still very good looking but "showing" some age which is important in parts of the movie plot.
So what starts as a zany decision by an eccentric mother turns into a poignant coming of age story of the two boys and a self discovery of the strength of the mother.
I enjoyed it very much.
