Paris 36
Paris 36 is pretty good for a musical, not my genre. Story centres around a variety theatre in the Fauborg area of Paris which is closed down when the owner is forced to sell out to the neighborhood fascist goon and then commits suicide. After several months, the actors, director and staff decide to occupy the theatre and re-open it on their own. The goon thinks he can win over the community if he pretends to be nice, including a sweet innocent young singer from rural France.
Movie is really about pre- WWII politics in France coincident with the Spanish Civil War, e.g. the fascists vs. the workers. There is an embedded love story and a story about the theatre director and his young son which social workers have sent to live with his ex-wife, who abandoned both son and daughter.
Not being a musical fan, I got a bit bored some way through. But it is good just not terrific. Film is subtitled, including the songs.
Rent it on DVD when it comes out.
