Waltz With Bashir
Walt With Bashir is an excellent docudrama done with animation about the 1982 invasion of Lebanon and the massacre of Palestinians at two refuge camps inside Lebanon. Boaz asks his friends who are also veterans of that war about their memories. He is plagued with a night mare where 26 vicious dogs (no more, no less) run through the streets of his city scaring people and then end up below his apartment, glaring up at him.
His friend share their own nightmares and few memories of the war. It is apparent that all are suffering from some type of trauma-induced memory loss. Over time, discussions with a psychiatrist, a war correspondent, and with many continuing discussions with veterans, their memories come back. He slowly builds a story of the atrocities seen during the war and the guilt they all carry for the massacre of many hundreds of Palestinians during that war by Israeli allied Christian Phalangists wherein the Isaraelis stood by and did not act until too late. It includes statements by an Israeli who called Arial Sharon during the middle of the the night to tell him about the massacre. Sharon acknowledges the massacre but does nothing to stop it.
The film is graphic (animated though until the very end) in violence, sex and language. It is excellent but will disturb many. It should deeply disturb all who see it. It is a must see. Just don't expect to walk away happy. If you do, you are psychotic. Seek immediate help.
