The International

Clive Owen as Agent Louis Salinger of Interpol and Naomi Watts as Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman are trying to bring a bank in Germany to justice.  They, the bank,  are in fact financing small arms and acting both as a financier and power broker for the Chinese and third world rogue elements in the overthrow of governments and other illegal activities.

As one of the trailers talks of this movie, " you will have to go outside the system as everyone is involved."  Interpol is of course nothing more than an intelligence gathering information service giving advice to local countries to help them in investigations.  That of course has to be frustrating to Louis Salinger when it is obvious that local law enforcement elements are on the take and involved in many ways.

The plot will take us through several countries and situations , some sub plots and of course it's final conclusion.

For a change there are unbelievable James Bond theatrics, most of the plot is too close to home right now, and the special effects are all plausible.  This is good but not great thriller.  I almost expected more intense special effects, but was not disappointed at the real life frustrations of his business and the problems in bringing multi-national corporations to justice. Even the scene at Guggenheim in New York is very real looking and could have been overdone but was not.  However the characters themselves were somewhat bland with shallow personalities.  Further we get almost no background or motivation for Louis and Eleanor's obsession other than the fact they have been working n this case for years and both agency's are getting tired of them coming up short.  Of course the truth is every witness, every person that they get close to or can turn, are murdered or disappear as the bank keeps one step ahead of them.   I found myself empathizing with his solution but be prepared for a very interesting ending.   I'll not speak of it here.

The whole story a is poignant lesson on real life problems in not just our finance system but systemic in our society with larger companies and the people in power that run them that seem to evade the law. This is too bad as well run companies need not break the law to show a profit and greed is personal not corporate trait! A person is greedy not a company, rather  the company  is the vehicle that the greedy use to exploit the system, company, shareholders and customers.   Bottom line is a 3 out 4 star rating.
