1980's Honk Kong style thriller meets Hero's. A few big names, horrible script and mostly mediocre performances will destine this to the scrap heap.
Saying that I am still a Dakota Fanning fan. She is at that awkward age where good adolescent movies are far and few in between. Most being stupid tween comedies. She was much better in " Secret Life of Bees" and I hope she or her agent can pick something better for her in the future. Still it was a more grown up role. I also have enjoyed the talented Djimon Hounsou but this was not his best work either.
Like hero's we have people with extraordinary mental capabilities that the government agency, The Division. is tying to perfect with drugs to create super human possibilities to create an army but to date none have any talent have survived the enhancing drugs.
Nick Gant, played by actor Chris Evans, is a second generation Telekinetic, called a mover. He was orphaned when the Division killed his father for refusing to participate in one of their experiments. Prior it seems his father had consulted a "watcher" a person that can see the future that told him his son will be approached some day in the future by a lady with a flower and he is to help her at all costs. 10 years later, now grown up, still on the run in the middle of Hong Kong Nick gets a knock on the door and it's Cassie Holmes, played by Dakota Fanning, seeking Nick's help in finding a "Pusher" named Kira Hudson played by Camilla Belle. A pusher is someone with the ability to implant thoughts in the minds of others and can be the most damaging. In addition to this there are people that can erase memory, blast supersonic sound waves, heal the sick and bleeders that can do damage and shadows that can conceal the mind of someone from the watchers. Getting to be more like Hero's sounding all the time. But that is where it ends.
The story revolves around the agency trying in vain to find Kira who may have the key to stopping the Division's program.
The story line is hard to follow, there are some other clans and families involved but we're really not all that convinced why. There is a shape shifter that can shift objects, it seems only temporally. We see some cute card tricks and he is entertaining but more sinister and convincing are the ability to transform plain paper into money or business cards into Fake ID's. It seemed useful. Also why are all the watchers worried about making money or risking their lives for it ? If they can see the future why not focus on the stock market and pick a winner once in a while ? At least the one shape shifter seemed to enjoy his talent in that benign criminal kind of way.
Finally when all is solved, there was no real conclusion to many of the movies questions rather it was setting us up for a TV series or a. "I'll doubt they're ever get a green light" sequel. This was on par for a badly made TV movie with some big budget names and effects. Too bad.........It had possibilities.

Argh, so angry
matt — Sat, 02/07/2009 - 02:21I wanted this movie to be awesome so badly. :(
Being a big Heroes fan and a fan of the genre in general, I was very excited by the trailer. The effects were on display and looked great.
So disappointing.
On the other hand, the first episode of Heroes Volume IV: Fugitives, was awesome, so I'll take solace in the fact that they may be getting that show back on track.
