Revolutionary Road
Saw Revolutioary Road in Reno today. Think American Beauty minus humor. Frank (deCaprio) and April (Winslet) are a married couple in middle class 1950's. He hates his job and she hates being a house wife in boring suburbia. Before they were married, he wanted to go back to Paris as he loved it in World War II. Now with two children she proposes to him that they sell off their house and car and move to Paris. She will work as a secretary while he finds himself. He goes for it but soon middle class 1950's values grind down on him, she turns up pregnant, and he uses that as an excuse to not go. She wants to go anyway. Film is relentless in its unswerving march towards disaster for this couple. Their only happy time is the couple of months of summer while they are preparing for their move to Paris. Otherwise they deal with infidelity, abortion, the insane son of the older woman real estate agent who sold them their house, surprise and not well hidden scorn from co-workers and neighbors when they announce their plans, etc. Very good but very bleak.
