Last Chance Harvey
Saw a delightful romantic comedy starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson called Last Chance Harvey. These are two of my favourite actors. Hoffman plays Harvey, a middle aged jingle writer from NY who flies to London for his daughter's wedding. Thompson plays Kate, a single survey taker at Heathrow Airport with a troublesome meddling mother. The two first meet for a very few seconds when she tries to get him to answer a survey as he gets off his flight and he rudely puts him off. They run into each other the next day at a pub at the airport after his daughter had her step-father to give her away at her wedding and he has just been fired from his job after missing his return flight and she has suffered through an awful blind date. Initially they insult each other but end up making friends and agreeing to spend the afternoon together walking around London. Meanwhile Kate is dealing with frequent phone calls from her mother who claims that the Polish man next door has just burned a body in his backyard. She insists that he go to his daughter's wedding reception that evening and he insists that she come along. There's no sex and just barely a kiss in this movie. It is all about lonely sad middle aged folks who feel somewhat broken and have given up on relationships finding perhaps a new chance. Delightful cute film. See it to cheer yourself up, especially us over 50's.
