Jim Carrey returns to the screen  in a formula written low brow comedy, the Yes Man.  With the expected Carrey over zealous and exaggerated  facial and body expressions it mostly fails.  Sadly the script had a few too many low brow sexual points that had nothing to do with the movie plot and were a disappointment to this movie goer. 

Carrey as  Carl Allen, plays a sad, divorced, withdrawn shell of a man that says mostly "No" to almost everything in life.  He responds to a challenge and comes to a religious / revival / motivational talk where Terence, the Guru of sorts, challenges him to say "Yes" to everything.  That with this change his life will transform for the better.  No matter how crazy the request, Carl says yes!  This leads to a whole plethora of funny outcomes and would have worked better without the unneeded crudeness written into  dialog.  Carl's life is transformed of course in many ways, many with humorous lifes of their own.  Life in reality is not all that different.  Our perspective and reaction to life's challenges can lead to either positive or negative consequences, this movie tries to highlight that in a comedic fashion.

I like the fact that Carrey can deliver serious acting as well as his own branded comedy, and normally enjoy his zany performances.  I was hoping for some of the 1990's magic that propelled him to stardom. This movie script seemed more like a paycheck and a job. The real zest seems to be gone.  The crude lines from the witers,  not only failed, they hurt the overall performace of Carrey and his fellow actors.  Another sad commentary is the fact the Carrey is starting to show his age and when paired as a love interest with Zooey Deschanel  as his girl friend when he is almost old enough to be her father was also a little disappointing.  Zooey did anything particularly wrong. She was cast and played her part as Allison as well as any person could have. On a bight spot you'll enjoy the performance of veteran actor Terrence stamp as the "Yes Guru" Terrence. 

There are funny moments and the movie is mildly entertaining.  Still I left with a bad after taste and not for lack of trying on Mr. Carreys attempt.
