The Chorus (Les Choristes)
The Chorus is a delightful French film (subtitled) about a boys school for incorrigible kids (and a few orphans) in post World War II France. An older man takes the position of prefect where he is in charge of 60 boys in a dormitory and their study hall. The school's headmaster is a rigid incompetent petty fool whose modus operandi is "action - reaction." Each act out by a boy is punished by a very severe reaction by the head master. For the slightest infraction, young boys are locked up in a dark solitary prison cell. The more cruel the headmaster's punishment the increasingly more serious the boys' retaliation against him...resulting in escalating hatred and violence. The new prefect's first love is music and he composes choral music as a hobby. He soon starts turning the boys into a delightful chorus and wins over the hearts of even the most resistant and difficult kids. His method is based upon understanding, compassion and punishment fitting the crime. So when a boy draws a cartoon making fun of his bald head, he draws a caricature of the boy that has the whole class laughing and the boy chagrined. His methods are reluctantly allowed by the headmaster because they've made for a more peaceful school. But the prefect's methods usurp the headmaster's power whose ego won't tolerate a competent subordinate forever. Delightful film, guaranteed to make you smile. You can rent it from Netflix.
