Innocent Voices
From Netflix you can rent Innocent Voices which occurs during the early months of the civil war in El Salvador (1980-1992) which pitted the US trained El Salvador Army against peasant militias who were trying to gain land for the poor. This true story follows an 11 year old boy, his friends, and his mother, grandmother and siblings as they try to survive when their poor village becomes the front line. The boys in this village are terrified of the war because, in addition to nightly shelling and fighting, the Army shows up at their school every few weeks and forcibly recruits all the boys who have just turned 12. Our little hero Oscar Torres is terrified of reaching his 12th birthday. This film does not pull any punches as we see innocent women and children killed during each assault on the village by the Army and we see the Army escort 12 year old boys who've run away and joined the militia to the river for execution. It is just atrocious that for 12 years (during Reagan and Bush I years) the US Army was training 12, 13 and 14 year old boys for the El Salvador Army and supplying armaments. Beautifully, filmed, excellently acted, and wonderfully told true story.
