Burn After Reading
Burn After Reading is another twisted dark comedy by the Coen Brothers. It crosses and blurs genres but is a welcome after some of their misses in recent past. It stars Joel's wife, Francis McDormand, Brat Pitt, George Clooney, and John Malkovich, Tild Swindon, and J.K.Simmons as the CIA chief.
It starts with John Malkovich's character, Osborne Cox, getting pushed out of a job at the CIA and in a rage he quits. He has a temper and a drinking problem. He plans his memoirs and writes a book, that is lost and found later by a pair of trainers in a gym, Linda Litzke played by Francis McDormand and Chad Feldheimer played by Bad Pitt. Francis has a way of finding and creating a character in a Coen Film as if it was written just for her. ( part probably was ) and Brad gets to play a gum chewing trainer, that rides a bicycle to a business meeting and is without a doubt one brick shy of a full load. Most of the movie revolves around Linda Litzke trying to get a series of face lifts, tummy tucks and assorted other surgeries paid for that her insurance of course calls, discretionary. She sees this disks as CIA spy material and is either trying to blackmail Osborne Cox or sell it to the highest bidder. All the main characters interact their twisted lives together in a series of comedies that together make a fun assemble of slapstick and yet pretty improbable events. Yet when they happen they all seem funny at the time.
Osborne Cox's wife, Katie Cox, is a doctor played by TIlda Swindon and what we find out very quickly is that there is a lot of infidelity going on. George Clooney is cheating on his wife and later we find out cheating on his girlfriend too! Be forewarned for the prudent this is adult humor! Sex scenes are not graphic but there is some very graphic dialog, and sex objects I'd rather you discover in the movie as it is shocking and hilarious, and it seems everyone is either chasing, following or having an affair with someone else.
The only thing funnier is the cast all looks like they had a great time making the movie. It was one of those ..."You mean I get paid too" moments for the cast. The ending is even funnier.
Good escapism, adult dark humor with just a enough mystery and intrigue to keep us focused.
